Frosting can be smooth or swirled and it tastes good too; and you can buy it ready to use, or make it yourself. * Butter icing is also a popular choice and it’s easy to make. * Glacé icing is probably the easiest of icings to make, and it’s not only good for icing cakes but great for cookies too. * A doily, or a piece of paper with shapes such as stars or hearts utout, laid on top of a sponge cake and dredged with sifted confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar), or cocoa powder, then carefully removed to reveal a pretty pattern, is a simple but effective way of decorating a sponge cake.
